A background to our Club

A very warm welcome to all our New Members and the many followers who have joined us!

Did you know that our club, here in the heart of the midlands, is around for almost 13 years now?

Athlone Triathlon Club was established in 2008, when a small number of local athletes, who were training and racing as individuals, came together to form a club.

The club grew rapidly over the first few years, attracting a lot of newbies seeking to try out the sport of Triathlon; many of whom really took to it and are still involved with us today!

We have tasted success many times over the years, with multiple members winning National Championship titles in their age groups, and success abroad in international competition. Our members have travelled worldwide to take part in amazing events such as World and European Championships, and grueling Ironman events.

We established a Junior section in the club, which is now entering it’s fourth year, and is continuing to grow strongly. Our amazing Junior athletes have travelled with us to great events all around the country and have competed in our own local club events many times. We have some rising Triathlete stars in our ranks for sure!

For the past number of years, we have successfully hosted events, which attract athletes of all abilities to Athlone for quality competition and fun. Our events cater for everyone, from the best and most experienced athletes to beginners and novices looking to do their first event.

Our events programmes have included an open water triathlon in Coosan, with a sprint distance race and tri-a-tri for novices,  an aquathon (again with options for beginners and relays) and an indoor super sprint race in Ballinasloe aimed at the very novice end of the racing spectrum. We have proudly supported and hosted our “Get Men Moving” initiative, with a 6 week professionally coached period and a beginner Triathlon event finish for men with no history of training or making a return back to training from a prolonged break.

This past year, with Covid largely halting official training and racing around the Country, we endeavored to keep the focus on our sport and training at the forefront and keep our members engaged and supported physically and mentally. Our members benefited from over 20 weeks of home training sessions virtually and no less than 20 club events and challenges catering for every level and age category and keeping our club spirit alive - a very successful year in many respects.

We are incredibly lucky to have two International Triathlon Union Level 2 accredited coaches, and recent joint winners of the prestigious Spirit of Triathlon Awards, taking care of things and still providing top quality training and club challenges virtually each week despite our current climate.
