Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon

Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon this past weekend offered a private lake swim, a bike around the Burren and a run that took in stunning grounds and a chance to cross the finish line at the front of the castle. And despite a notoriously challenging and very testing race route, 10 members of Athlone Triathlon Club showed up, raced hard and conquered that course! 💪🏻🖤💛

Toeing the start lines over the 2 days of racing in Co Galway were Mick, Olivia, Ger, Declan, Derek, Brian, Éilis, Maureen, Therese and Colette and with lots of steely determination and fantastic racing efforts across the distances, ATC picked up some podiums and age group wins on the day.

Declan Kelly, in his second ever open event, took on the Super Sprint Event over a 400m swim, 20km cycle and 4km run distance and following a superb performance in each discipline, achieved first place overall and took the gold.

Derek Nugent, racing in the Standard Distance Triathlon Event, pulled off a blistering performance over a 1500m swim, a 40km cycle and 10km run and bagged a podium with 3rd placed male overall and first in his age group.

Next up, in the Standard Distance Aquathlon Event, over a 1500m swim and 10km run, Éilis Treacy’s brilliant performance saw her take the podium for 3rd placed female overall and 1st in her age group.

Lining out alongside Olivia McCartin for the National Championship Aquabike event, over a 1500m swim and 40km bike, Club Members Mick Macken and Ger Lynch pulled out all the stops and their smashing performances yielded first and second places respectively in their age groups.

An incredible weekend of racing and lots of very proud moments for our club and club-mates. Sending our thanks to Castle Race Series for another great event.
